Internationally orientated university researcher.
Due to take post as a fellow of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge in September 2003.
Earlier teaching and research positions were at inter alia the University of Stellenbosoch (with which I remain affiliated), the University of Uppsala, the University of California, and the University of Oslo. I have also had the privilege of delivering guest lectures at ca. 130 universities and other institutions in England, Norway, Sweden, the USA, South Africa, Hong Kong, and other countries.
Much of my professional time is devoted to writing; to date I have published twelve books and contributed ca. 145 articles to scholarly journals in twenty-one countries. My publications have dealt with a fairly broad spectrum of topics in each of several fields: literature, history, religious/theological studies. To a lesser extent I have also published in the areas of contemporary world affairs and ethics. My avocational interests include athletics, reading, travel, humour, photography, and human intelligence.
Member of Mensa and a few smaller IQ societies.
